My classes are designed to take your painting to the next level by asking you to consider what it means to be an artist. Organized like a laboratory, they encourage an exploration of art practices and art making specific to artistic maturation. You will explore a variety of approaches to painting, hone your technical painting skills, and look closer at contemporary painting practices. You will increase your familiarity with art history and concepts of contemporary art specific to painting through in-class lectures, local museum and gallery visits and image presentations. My goal is to aid you to make painting a valuable part of your life that leads to personal expression as well as a foundation to build upon in your future artistic/academic pursuits.

 

Collage: The Art of Sustainability ART X423.1 

The relevance and importance of sustainable artistic practices grows clearer with the planet on the edge of a global calamity after a century of unchecked production and consumption. Collage offers a way to promote socially responsible art by reusing the already-existing ephemera all around us. Illustrated lectures introduce the use of collage by artists of historic movements such as Dada, Surrealism, Outsider Art, Assemblage and Land Art. Course projects encourage you to explore the vast potential of using recycled and found discarded materials such as wood, used books, newspapers, cardboard and fabric to investigate new conceptual possibilities through juxtaposing images, materials and ideas.

Live Online Access classroom-style interactive learning from anywhere in the world! Attend scheduled online sessions with your instructor and classmates in addition to completing your coursework. Live Online format allows you to take classes from anywhere with an internet connection. Classroom sections will be taught in this format through Fall 2020. 

Many schools are now awarding transfer credit for online coursework, including health and sciences programs. Check with your institution before enrolling.

Approaches to Abstraction in Painting X412.1

Understand the many options possible for making an abstract painting. Explore a variety of approaches, such as improvisational abstraction, geometric abstraction, process-based painting and abstraction based on mark making. The instructor offers demonstrations of painting techniques and image-illustrated lectures on the history of abstract painting and its current trends. Group discussions and critiques help familiarize you with the vocabulary and concepts involved in analyzing and evaluating abstraction.

Francesca Pastine, M.F.A., is a visual artist, curator and art educator who has taught at California College of the Arts, San Francisco Art Institute, City College of San Francisco and Dominican University. She was the recipient of a Pollock Krasner Grant in 2009, a Kala Fellowship in 2011, and the Eureka Fellowship from the The Fleishhacker Foundation in 2014 . Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.

Cut Up/Cut Out

Cut Up/Cut Out features approximately 100, 2-D and 3-D works by a dynamic roster of national and international artists who explore the practice of “cutting” in various ways – from cut paper to plastic to metal.
The art of cutting paper dates back thousands of years, with early artworks coming from 6^th Century China. The artists of Cut Up/Cut Out explore the many methods of decorative piercing and cutting, but extend their media to include paper, cloth, metal, wood, rubber and much more. The transformative nature of cutting into and through a surface provides endless possibilities for converting the material from opaque to transparent, from flat to sculptural, from rigid to delicate, and from ordinary to exquisite. The artist might retain the plane of the surface and incise it to create lace-like imagery, or use thousands of intricately cut pieces to build a sculptural object or atmosphere. The process and precision required for this method of art-making is laborious, technically demanding, and always astonishing.

Francesca Pastine strives to evoke the Romantic notion of the artist as explorer navigating vast realms of possibility. Inspired by NASA’s Mars Rover, Curiosity, and its exploration of uncharted territory on Mars, her work offers a contemporary take on the notion of Sublime, a key theme in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American art. Pastine was drawn to the rover because it is named “Curiosity” and she believes that being curious is an essential element of being an artist. Like the Mars Rover, the artist as explorer seeks to go beyond her limits and to make visible the vast landscape of her imagination.

Pastine probes the potential of material and its transformation through chance and discovery. The unpredictability of the watercolor medium allows for inspired accidents; her sculpture is informed by unexpected juxtaposition and unique contradictions. The paintings appear as otherworldly landscapes and employ visual voids and veils to represent sites of artistic ferment, the imagination, and revelation. The sculptures represent vessels and, like the rover, are of a crudeness that belies the sophistication essential for the exploration of unmapped terrain.

This winter the Bedford Gallery presents Cut Up/Cut Out, an exhibition of local, national, and international artists who explore the captivating methods of decorative piercing and cutting, using a wide range of media from paper and plastic to metal and rubber. The transformative nature of cutting into and through a surface provides endless possibilities for converting the material from opaque to transparent, from flat to sculptural, from rigid to delicate, and from ordinary to exquisite. The process and precision required for this method of art-making is laborious, technically demanding, and always astonishing. Organized by the Bedford Gallery, Cut Up/Cut Out will travel nationally through 2020.
The art of cutting paper dates back thousands of years, with early artworks coming from 6^th century China. Originally a decorative handcraft for women, Chinese paper-cutting eventually expanded into rural areas, becoming a staple at religious ceremonies and festivals. By the 14^th century, paper-cutting spread to the rest of the world bringing in a new wave of folk art traditions. Cut Up/Cut Out honors both innovation and tradition with a selection of over 50 artists representing diverse styles and techniques.

     Taking a two-pronged approach toward the use of paper, this exhibition brings together works that are composed of re-purposed materials, applied in a rhythmic and serial manner.  On one hand the works share the choice of materials and on the other hand introduces a shared esthetic. In transforming the properties of the material the artists are employing a sculptural and/or reductive approach to the possibilities of working with paper.
     By cutting, folding, weaving, bending, collage-ing and sewing these artists explore the diverse properties and applications of paper while moving away from utilizing it’s illusionistic aspects. The manifold possibilities of paper, combined with its humble nature, make it the preferred material for a democratic and direct approach as an artist medium.
