Collage: The Art of Sustainability ART X423.1

The relevance and importance of sustainable artistic practices grows clearer with the planet on the edge of a global calamity after a century of unchecked production and consumption. Collage offers a way to promote socially responsible art by reusing the already-existing ephemera all around us. Illustrated lectures introduce the use of collage by artists of historic movements such as Dada, Surrealism, Outsider Art, Assemblage and Land Art. Course projects encourage you to explore the vast potential of using recycled and found discarded materials such as wood, used books, newspapers, cardboard and fabric to investigate new conceptual possibilities through juxtaposing images, materials and ideas.

Cut Up/Cut Out

2017-2020 National Tour

Cut Up/Cut Out features approximately 100, 2-D and 3-D works by a dynamic roster of national and international artists who explore the practice of “cutting” in various ways – from cut paper to plastic to metal.
The art of cutting paper dates back thousands of years, with early artworks coming from 6th Century China. The artists of Cut Up/Cut Out explore the many methods of decorative piercing and cutting, but extend their media to include paper, cloth, metal, wood, rubber and much more. The transformative nature of cutting into and through a surface provides endless possibilities for converting the material from opaque to transparent, from flat to sculptural, from rigid to delicate, and from ordinary to exquisite. The artist might retain the plane of the surface and incise it to create lace-like imagery, or use thousands of intricately cut pieces to build a sculptural object or atmosphere. The process and precision required for this method of art-making is laborious, technically demanding, and always astonishing.

artists include:

James Allen, Ana Bidart, Lucrezia Bieler, Tord Boontje, Nathalie Boutté, Claire Brewster, Robert Brinker, Rogan Brown, Sarah Burgess, Michael Buscemi, Charles Clary, Adriane Colburn, Wim Delvoye, Lorenzo Durán, Mounir Fatmi, Hillary Waters Fayle, Adam Feibelman, Carmen Lomas Garza, Margaret Griffith, Mayumi Hamanaka, Adriene Heloise, Meg Hitchcock, Justine Khamara, Kyong Ae Kim, Will Kurtz, Lauren Kussro, Cal Lane, Bovey Lee, Simone Lourenço, Karen Margolis, Chris Natrop, Amy Oates, Francesca Pastine, Irène Pijoan, Nikki Rosato, Donna Ruff, Rob Ryan, Lyndi Sales,  Gabriel Schama, Brian Singer, Andy Singleton, Xin Song, Jen Stark, Janna Syvänoja, Yuken Teruya, Kako Ueda, Annie Vought, Mark Wagner, Maude White, Barbara Wildenboer, Ty Zemelsky

Francesca Pastine strives to evoke the Romantic notion of the artist as explorer navigating vast realms of possibility. Inspired by NASA’s Mars Rover, Curiosity, and its exploration of uncharted territory on Mars, her work offers a contemporary take on the notion of Sublime, a key theme in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American art. Pastine was drawn to the rover because it is named “Curiosity” and she believes that being curious is an essential element of being an artist. Like the Mars Rover, the artist as explorer seeks to go beyond her limits and to make visible the vast landscape of her imagination.

Pastine probes the potential of material and its transformation through chance and discovery. The unpredictability of the watercolor medium allows for inspired accidents; her sculpture is informed by unexpected juxtaposition and unique contradictions. The paintings appear as otherworldly landscapes and employ visual voids and veils to represent sites of artistic ferment, the imagination, and revelation. The sculptures represent vessels and, like the rover, are of a crudeness that belies the sophistication essential for the exploration of unmapped terrain.

I am happy to be included in cut Up/cut Out at the Bedford Gallery.  The exhibit opens Sunday, December 18 from 3 to 5pm
ARTFORUM MASK SERIES, Francesca Pastine

December 18 - March 5, 2017

Organized by the Bedford Gallery and will travel nationally.

This winter the Bedford Gallery presents Cut Up/Cut Out, an exhibition of local, national, and international artists who explore the captivating methods of decorative piercing and cutting, using a wide range of media from paper and plastic to metal and rubber. The transformative nature of cutting into and through a surface provides endless possibilities for converting the material from opaque to transparent, from flat to sculptural, from rigid to delicate, and from ordinary to exquisite. The process and precision required for this method of art-making is laborious, technically demanding, and always astonishing. Organized by the Bedford Gallery, Cut Up/Cut Out will travel nationally through 2020.
The art of cutting paper dates back thousands of years, with early artworks coming from 6th century China. Originally a decorative handcraft for women, Chinese paper-cutting eventually expanded into rural areas, becoming a staple at religious ceremonies and festivals. By the 14th century, paper-cutting spread to the rest of the world bringing in a new wave of folk art traditions. Cut Up/Cut Out honors both innovation and tradition with a selection of over 50 artists representing diverse styles and techniques.

Taking a two-pronged approach toward the use of paper, this exhibition brings together works that are composed of re-purposed materials, applied in a rhythmic and serial manner.  On one hand the works share the choice of materials and on the other hand introduces a shared esthetic. In transforming the properties of the material the artists are employing a sculptural and/or reductive approach to the possibilities of working with paper.
By cutting, folding, weaving, bending, collage-ing and sewing these artists explore the diverse properties and applications of paper while moving away from utilizing it’s illusionistic aspects. The manifold possibilities of paper, combined with its humble nature, make it the preferred material for a democratic and direct approach as an artist medium.

art on paper review

Happy to be mentioned in Hyperallergic's article on the art on paper fair

Art on Paper Joins the Armory Week Fold

Art on Paper
Puppets by Wayne White at Art on Paper, which were part of the 2014 ‘FOE’ installation at York College; cardboard, wood, and acrylic paint. Joshua Liner Gallery, New York. (all photos by the author for Hyperallergic)
Despite Art on Paper‘s name, the work on view at the first-time Armory Week fair includes as many different materials as at any other fair, with art created on paper and art inspired by paper on view.
Art on Paper
Exterior of Art on Paper at Pier 36, with a banner of a rabbit drawing by Dave Eggers at left. (click to enlarge)
The fair has a fantastic showpiece installation in the form of Wayne White‘s colossal cardboard cowboys, one of which towers just inside the main entrance at Pier 36 on the East River. They were originally on view at York College of Pennsylvania last year as giant puppets. Also greeting visitors is a giant banner of a rabbit drawn by Dave Eggers on the exterior of the pier — the author is showing his illustrations with San Francisco gallery Electric Works — and an indoor installation of giant paper airplanes by Michael Scoggins, who has more oversized, elementary school-inspired notebook paperwork with New York’s Freight + Volume.
Perhaps a little ironically for a fair about art that celebrates paper, quite a few artists on view destroyed paper objects — namely books — to make their work. Most of it is well-crafted, however. Francesca Pastine‘s mask made from an issue of Artforum, the X-Acto blades dangling like necklaces, is on view with San Francisco’s Eleanor Harwood Gallery, and Brian Dettmer‘s tower of sliced hardcovers reveals a collage of encyclopedia images in the booth of New York’s Jayne H. Baum Gallery.
While the major art cities of the US coasts are well represented at the fair, there are also galleries from Paris, Vienna, Baltimore, Toronto, and elsewhere that don’t often show in New York present. Art on Paper was launched by Art Market Productions, which runs other fairs around the United States like Miami Project, Texas Contemporary, and Seattle Art Fair. If it sticks around for another year, it has the potential to fold some new regional flavor into the Armory Week fair frenzy.
